4 Ways to use Copywriting in your Business
What is Copywriting?
Copywriting is a marketing style in which a professional writer uses simple but powerful words to appeal to a reader or potential client, usually found in advertising, though e-mails, brochures, videos and classifieds.
Why use Copywriting?
Copywriting may have its roots in direct sales and advertising, but for the average blogger, this can be the difference between someone simply reading your content and someone who engages with your content, coming back for more every time you upload.
I’m sure you know about writing as much as you can in the least words possible. Even though it’s not realistic for all blog posts, posts with the aim of helping fellow bloggers or sending an important message should be focused on being short but powerful.
How you can use copywriting in your blog today:
- Pay attention to your headline.
- Your headline is the one that your potential reader sees first.
- Do they understand it the first time?
- Are they compelled to click and finish the post?
- If you plan to make it as a social media graphic, does it appeal to them with any aspects like the color scheme or images?
Examples of headline types are:
- How-to
- Ask a question
- Shocking or amazing fact
- A number – 3 Steps to Great Sleep, for example.
- Make sure your body copy/text flows well.
- Short, straightforward sentences. Avoid writing too many sentences that run over lines in a paragraph.
- Use simple words. It might make you uncomfortable if you have a better vocabulary, but it’s not about you. Do your best to improve how it sounds and how quickly you can finish your copy without stopping by reading it aloud first.
- Make it conversational. Act like a friend who’s letting another friend on a secret they won’t forget, and won’t forget to share.
- Don’t forget the call to action – make them share and comment at the end of the post!
- Mention all the benefits as soon as you can
- Put those first, if anything. Some readers don’t read everything, so put them where they can read it and save the details for those who’d rather read it all, towards the end. Better yet, don’t put it at all.
- This also applies to social media posts, where you put the most important information on each slide and leave the details in your blog post online.
- Read, listen, watch!
- Books like Words That Sell and The Copywriter’s Handbook are a great place to structure your headlines and text well.
- Blogs like Copy Blogger are great too.
- CopyPosse is a great copywriting YouTube channel for those who learn through audio and/or video.
These are 4 ways this helps you and save you time when you sit down to write. Good luck!
